Congratulations on your Onewheel purchase! While you eagerly await its arrival, avoid these five common beginner mistakes:
- Excessive Accessory Buying: Many beginners rush to purchase every Onewheel accessory available, even before their first ride. Save your money for essentials like a fender, sidekicks, rail guards, float plates, and safety gear. Custom footplates and advanced accessories can come later.
- Lack of Safety Gear: Prioritize safety by wearing at least a helmet and wrist guards, and consider knee and elbow guards if you feel the need. Safety gear significantly reduces the impact of falls, which are inevitable.
- Inadequate Dismounting: Learn how to dismount safely. Avoid stepping off one foot at a time, which can lead to imbalance and injury. Instead, practice controlled jumps to exit your Onewheel.
- Obsession with Speed: New riders often fixate on speed records, leading to speed wobbles or nosedives. Ride at a comfortable pace initially, gradually building speed and skills. The thrill of speed should come after gaining experience.
- Discouragement After Falls: Falling is part of the learning process. Don’t let a bad fall deter you from enjoying the Onewheel. Reflect on your mistakes, learn from them, and keep riding. The Onewheel experience is worth the effort.
By avoiding these common pitfalls, you’ll start your Onewheel journey on the right foot and enjoy a safer and more fulfilling riding experience.

Hey- spent a ton of time on your site, got a bunch of awesome tips. I am 48, and have a long list of activities I have been a part of. Climbing, skiing, big wall climbing, ice climbing, skateboarding, skiing and snow boarding. Also slack lining.. I feel slack lining has me most prepared. Just bought an xr brand new today. Followed your tips and hopped on and started riding it. It felt comfortable and intuitive. I spent 15 minutes going maybe 6 miles an hour. Awesome. Did not push it and called it a success. I can feel it in my feet and quads. Can’t wait to get out some more. Thanks again..
Tim Widmer. Aka tillawheeler.. since I live in Tillamook Oregon!
Cheers
