We’ve moved! Check out our FULL article here. Summary below.
In this article, I discuss extending the range of Onewheel Plus and V1 using EGO batteries. I provide an overview of my findings and two primary methods of installation: the XLR Port Installation Method and the Direct Parallel Installation Method.
- XLR Port Installation Method:
- Pros: Easy setup, warranty-friendly, increased range, battery swapping.
- Cons: Incompatible with newer Onewheel Plus models, no torque increase, potential XLR port damage. This method involves connecting an external battery to the XLR charging port. You need to ensure compatibility with your Onewheel model, and the EGO battery should be connected once the internal battery is partially depleted.
- Direct Parallel Installation Method:
- Pros: No XLR port damage risk, works on any model, easy battery swapping, no need for constant cable management.
- Cons: Longer initial setup, voids warranty, drilling into the battery box. Here, the EGO battery is connected in parallel with the Onewheel’s internal battery, providing additional capacity and range.
- XLR Port Installation Options:
- DIY or purchase a pre-made kit.
- Discuss compatibility based on Onewheel model.
- Sonnywheels.com EGO EXTENDER KIT Version 2:
- Pros: Free shipping, helpful video, adjustable battery height, double charging adapter.
- Cons: Limited compatibility, slow simultaneous charging, poor packaging. A detailed review of the Sonny Wheels EGO Extender Kit is provided with both pros and cons.
- Land Surf Ranger and XLR Cable Kit:
- Pros: Quality packaging, clear instructions, precise fit, battery swapping.
- Cons: Fender drilling, non-adjustable battery height, dedicated EGO charger required. A review of the Land Surf Ranger Kit and XLR Cable Kit is included, highlighting its pros and cons.
- CONCLUSION:
- Comparison of Land Surf Ranger and Sonny Wheels kits.
- Introduction to the Land Surf Ranger Parallel Installation Kit, suitable for all models but requiring battery box modification.
- Land Surf Ranger Kit Parallel Installation Kit:
- Pros: Reduced voltage sag, enhanced power, no need for XLR cable.
- Cons: Longer installation, warranty void, battery box modification required. A detailed description of the Land Surf Ranger Parallel Installation Kit is provided.
The article offers comprehensive insights into using EGO batteries for extending the range of Onewheel Plus and V1, along with a comparison of available kits and their pros and cons.

Does the Parallel installation kit from Land Surf Ranger charge with the Onewheel charger? and if so how long does it take. Or would I need to carry two chargers to make it work?
Good question. For fastest and most reliable charge I would use the EGO charger to make sure all the cells get balanced correctly. I’m still working the details out though. Go Cougars!
So i just ordered a used Onewheel + but need more range if I’m going to use it to get to work. I’ll still have to charge it at work, so that means carrying two chargers. I like the Two X better, but it’s more costly.
Do you find the EGO battery gets in the way at all, or is helpful in any other way. (I.E. can grip the Onewheel a little like the flight fins)
I’m looking to decide on one of these options real soon. Would appreciate your thoughts.
I’m constantly learning new things about these systems. I will update my review but in the meantime, know the following…

Please note the following: Make sure your Plus is hardware version 3206 or lower. Version 3208 will not work with the XLR cable. Instead, use the Ranger Parallel version if you have hardware 3208 or higher. You can find this info out by going to “settings” in your Onewheel app. All V1’s made will work with either XLR or parallel versions, so if you have a V1, you’re all set!
I don’t find that the EGO gets in the way, but it may be intimidating for some. If you are getting a new Plus, the hardware may not be compatible with XLR. The new hardware will be compatible with the EGO Parallel kit and the Two-X. I’d wait and get used to the range that you have on the stock Plus. It took me a few weeks before I could comfortably do 6 miles. Then you can maybe do a group ride and see if anyone has any range extending options you can give a test run.
Looking forward to your two x vs ranger comparison. Loving the 2x but i’ll be getting another board soon and curious which to get on it. Nice job on write up. Thanks Jimmy
Great review and comparison. I have a few comments and corrections from my experience being the first to develop and connect the EGO directly to the XLR port DIY and riding over 1000 miles with the Ranger CnR cable that Land-surf gave me to evaluate (beta test).
The Ranger CnR method provides nearly as much added torque as the Ranger parallel method. I have recently switched to using a parallel connection method so I don’t risk damage to my XLR port in crashes and I have closely monitored current supplied by the EGO for both connection methods and it behaves the same. I know this is true after hundreds of miles riding with both ways. You shouldn’t mention that as an advantage of using the parallel method.
However connecting in parallel bypasses the reverse current protection of the charging port which allows the EGO to store motor braking regen. This is a big advantage for emergency stops or when riding down long hills when the battery is close to full charge.
You didn’t address charging the EGO. Another difference between Ranger CnR and Sonny’s kit is that Sonny supplies a cable that allows you to charge the EGO and OW+ together or separately with just the stock OW charger. You can do the same with the Ranger parallel kit (leave EGO connected and plug the OW charger into the OW charging port) but Land-surf cautions against this. Land-surf instructions require the purchase of a separate EGO charger.
The EGO charger is best for charging the EGO battery because it isn’t known if the EGO will fully balance its cells when using the OW charger. Having separate chargers also allows you to charge everything faster. However charging both with the OW charger does work and it is nice to not need to carry the very bulky EGO charger if charging away from home. Having the EGO charger at home lets you make sure that the EGO cells stay balanced over many use cycles and allows for the fastest charging times, but it usually needs to be purchased separately if you don’t already have a EGO lawn tool.
Hello Mike,
Since you seem like the Men to ask for battery inf.
Here my question : On the XR OW is it OK or not so good to plug in your XR for charging at any level of % for example if your XR is at 90 or 95 % and I want to top it off to 100%. I was told one in while it’s good to drain it complete and charge it for 48 hr’s to re-balance the cell is that right?
I usually live my OW’s on charge over night.
Thank’s for input. Please reply to my email.
